My reasons were simple, executive coaching is<a href="http://selfleadership.com/blog/topic/leadership/executive-coaching-coming-of-age/"> coming of age </a>and yet the coaching industry is a &#8216;wild west&#8217; of different schools, methodologies, approaches and standards; through this confusion the ICF has emerged as a unifying force for defining professional coaching.<span id="more-1587"></span></p>
<p>I recently passed the ICF&#8217;s exam for Professional Certified Coach. Among requirements are; completion of coach-specific training, a minimum of 750 professional coaching hours, a written exam a recorded and live coaching session assessed by two examiners against 11 competencies.</p>
<p>The process was involved but rewarding because I have now had my coaching skills bench-marked and validated and have a clear path to ongoing <a href="http://selfleadership.com/blog/topic/leadership/how-to-achieve-mastery/">mastery</a>.</p>
<p>The majority of my Singapore and International <a href="http://www.selfleadership.com.sg/executive-coaching-singapore/">coaching clients </a>are corporate at the executive leve;l and until recently have cared more about referral or established brand than credentials. Things are changing and many of my larger client&#8217;s, especially the banks, have been setting up internal business processes that require coaches to be credentialed. To this end I am happy to comply with and uphold the highest level of professional behaviour.</p>

As he performed his sleight of hand and misdirection I wondered at the thousands of hours he must have invested to achieve mastery.</p>
<p> Mastery involves focus, concentration, passion, intention, commitment, and discipline.  We can’t achieve mastery in everything in fact most people are unlikely to achieve mastery in anything as they dabble in this and hack about at that.<span id="more-1389"></span></p>
<p> I know I have gotten all excited about something bought all the equipment only to have it gather dust some month later.</p>
<p>George Leonard identified four types of people that he experienced over the years: Dabblers, Hackers, Compulsives, and Masters.  As you read these descriptions perhaps you will recognise some elements of yourself, your friends or your colleagues?</p>
<p><strong>Dabblers</strong> get into one thing, develop a certain level of skill, get bored, drop it, and move on to something else. Or they have one business idea try it for a few months and then want to do something else.</p>
<p>You can identify dabblers because they are always “trying” – “I will try this”.</p>
<p><strong>Hackers</strong> develop a certain level of basic skill and then are content to sit on the plateau and never rise in skill or ability.  Hackers can evolve to new levels of skill, but usually do so only in response to some immediate need or crisis.</p>
<p>For example a social tennis player gets beaten and then takes lessons so that s/he can maintain face or an employee threatened by a new employee’s abilities and lifts their game so as not to be shown up.</p>
<p>You can identify hackers because they are always “Shoulding” – “I should get better at this.”</p>
<p><strong>Compulsives</strong> reach the first plateau and become uncomfortable with their level of performance and so push harder and harder to get better faster.  They may reach another plateau or two, but ultimately they burn out.</p>
<p>Compulsives are always struggling and you can identify them by them always saying, “I <span style="text-decoration: underline;">have</span> to do this.”</p>
<p><strong>Masters</strong> understand that the plateau is part and parcel of the mastery process.  They recognise that there are a never-ending series of plateaus on the path toward mastery.  They recognise that being on the plateau and practicing is every bit as exciting as spurts of growth.  So they are undaunted by plateaus; they view them as an expected part of the ebb and flow of life.</p>
<p>The path of the master involves getting instruction, practicing, surrendering to the practice, keeping a clear intention to be the best, periodically pushing the “edge of the envelop.”</p>
<p>Howard Gardner (Creating Minds) wrote extensive descriptions of 7 Geniuses of the 20th century, one as a representative of his Seven Intelligences.  In that work, he describes his research about the pattern that it typically takes a person Ten Years to Master a Field of study.</p>
<p>As a <a href="http://andrew-bryant.com">speaker</a>, trainer and coach I know that I am always learning and I know why I am learning; each time I engage with a client I feel that same passion and excitement as when I first started many, many years ago.</p>

<p>Did you know that your learning follows a path? Firstly you don&#8217;t know what your don&#8217;t know, which is a state I like to call &#8220;blissful ignorance.&#8221; On the learning path this is known as <em><strong>unconscious incompetence</strong>.<span id="more-1049"></span></em></p>
<p>When you learn about something new you first enter a stage of knowing what you don&#8217;t know or can&#8217;t yet do;  this is known as<em> </em><em><strong>conscious incompetence</strong></em>. This stage can be uncomfortable for adult learners as they feel awkward and self-conscious as they start practicing the skill. Many people have given up at this stage, think of those guitar lessons or yoga classes that you so eagerly signed up for. If the goal is important enough we push through the discomfort of not knowing and move to the next level, if you have learned to drive a car or use a piece of new software you know what I mean.</p>
<p>With practice comes<em> </em><em><strong>conscious competence</strong></em> &#8211; you know how to do the skill although you might still need to pay some attention to the task. Think about when you just passed your driving test or learned how to ride a bike &#8211; you could do it but you were still a bit wobbly.</p>
<p>The next stage is<em> </em><em><strong>unconscious competence</strong></em> where you can complete the  task automatically. If you can touch type your fingers know where the &#8216;Z&#8217; key is without you even thinking. Unfortunately many people drive this way as they talk on their mobile phones and eat fast food whilst navigating the roads! Most people stop learning at this level as the amount of practice to achieve the next level of mastery does not seem worth the effort.</p>
<p>Finally there is<em> </em><em><strong>consciousness of your unconscious competence</strong></em> &#8211; this is a high level of awareness of what you know and how you know it. At this level of learning the master of his or her craft seeks to find the fine distinctions that take knowledge or skills to new levels or into new contexts.  Many of us have experienced a teacher who knew thier subject (unconsious competence) but could not really teach it because they lacked a high level of awareness of how they do what they do.</p>
<p>To be an effective leader, teacher, coach or mentor we must understand the learning path and help our staff or students navigate it. We must remember the challenges we had in learning and share how we overcame these obstacles. It is too easy to become frustrated when it takes someone a while to get what we think is easy but we have usually forgotten to help them learn rather than just telling them.</p>
<p>Most importantly if you are stuck at conscious incompetence &#8211; ask for help, find a coach or someone who has mastered this before and ask them how they learned to learn the skill.</p>
