Newton's first law of motion, also known as the law of inertia, states that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force. This means that an object will continue to do what it is currently doing unless something else intervenes to change its course.
This law has significant implications for human success. In order to achieve success in any endeavor, individuals must apply force and momentum to move themselves or their circumstances in a desired direction. However, inertia can often be a formidable obstacle to this process, as it tends to keep things moving in their current direction.
To overcome the inertia from established systems and patterns, individuals must apply force through self-leadership.
"Self-leadership is the practice of intentionally influencing their thinking, feelings, and 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, toward their objectives." (Bryant & Kazan 2012)
For example, if an individual wants to change their #career path, they must apply force in the form of effort, education, and networking to move in a new direction. This force may initially be met with resistance, as the inertia of the current path seeks to maintain the status quo. However, with the right force, as identified by coaching, the individual can eventually overcome this resistance and move in a new direction.
Self-leadership creates a force through consistent effort, dedication, and perseverance. By applying this force, individuals can build momentum and overcome the inertia that may be holding them back from achieving their goals.
The Secret, a documentary and book by Rhonda Byrne has influenced the hearts and minds of many people worldwide. This premise of The Secret is when people change their thoughts can change their lives.
It is true that meditation, visualization, and positive thinking can augment intention but in line with Newton´s first law, nothing happens without action.
According to critics, The Secret focuses on narcissism and depicting ourselves as the center of the universe. It extols the virtues of entitlement and self-absorption that can only lead to one feeling worse instead of better in the long run.
A growth mindset and positive narratives encourage us to take responsibility and take action but wishful thinking and unearned entitlement are likely to result in blaming, complaining, and a victim mindset, which is the antithesis of self-leadership.
